Asset management is een hype en een containerbegrip. Voor de nodige duidelijkheid de volgende definitie van de FHWA:

"A systematic process of effectively maintaining, upgrading and operating assets, combining engineering principles with sound business practice and economic rationale, and providing the tools to facilitate a more organised and flexible approach to making decisions necessary to achieve the public's expectations."

De belangrijkste onderdelen hebben betrekking op "Systematic", "Economic Rationale" en "Public's Expectations".

Deze definitie is de basis voor een programma dat drie pijlers kent: Techniek, Informatie en Proces. 

Aan dit programma werken de drie technische universiteiten in Delft, Twente en Eindhoven mee, als ook de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam
